'Von' Ryan is Colonel Joseph Ryan of the U.S.A.A.F., shot down in Italy towards the end of the war. HE finds himself the senior officer among British and American forces in an Italian prisoner-of-war camp. The sudden Italian surrender and a Nazi trick deliver the prisoners into the hands of the retreating Germans, and Ryan finds himself in nominal command of a thousand mutinous and disappointed officers and men, rolling in twenty-four railway trucks towards deeper imprisonment in GErmany. From this moment develops an escape story as tense and exciting as any to some out of the Second World War.

Made into a film in 1965 starring Frank Sinatra.
