The trans-Australian wonderland of which Bolam writes is the land lying between eastern and western Australia. Generally regarded as marginal desert, the land for a long time was inhabited by Aborigines and visited only by explorers bent on survival. Bolam's book was the first account compiled by a person who had lived in the area for some considerable period, who had seen it in different seasons, studied at leisure the different animals and made friends with the Aboriginal inhabitants.
