I am writing this book for a purpose – to hold up to the light of day the activities of the real card-sharpers and confidence men. I say “real” advisedly, because the works of our more imaginative fiction writers have invested this whole crooked profession with a glamour that, while there is no doubt they deserve much of it, is apt to obscure the peculiarly cunning and subtle aspect of these men’s machinations.
