Man or monster, Richard III represents royal biography as a polarity.  In the late twentieth century, several centuries of vilification gave way to reappraisal, if not beatification, of a king whom tradition cast as the instigator of the murder of the innocent princes in the Tower.  In the process of that reassessment, Paul Murray Kendall's biography is the seminal work.  In every sense it is a major achievement of English royal biography, all the more remarkable for being the work of an American sholar.  It is alo hugely readable.
