From Railways of the World Series.

By the last years of the nineteenth century the framework of the South African Railway system was virtually completed, with the great trunk line from the Cape to Bulawayo, and its vital offshoot to Bloemfontein and Johannesburg; the line from Port elizabeth up to De Arr, and the Z.A.S.M. from Delagoa Bay. Lastly, of course, there was the developing Natal Government Railway system, striking northwards from Durban to Ladysmith. Excerpt from the Introduction.
