Great Australian Shearing Stories
The shearer, so much a part of the Australian economy when the country lived on the sheep's back, is now beginning to vanish into mythology. Bill 'Swampy' Marsh began collecting shearing stories several years ago, and when he was interviewed on the Sunday morning ABC radio program Summer All Over, he was inundated with calls from all over Australia, all keen to pass on their own. The result, a collection that brings to life a world of outback stations, larrikins, roustabouts, sagacious dogs and occasionally strange cooks, is a worthy addition not only to the bush yarn but to Australian social history.
