James Boswell was an 18th century Scottish lawyer, diarist and author. He is best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson who was a well-known literary figure in England. Johnson was an author, lexicographer, biographer and critic and has been quoted more than any other English author with the exception of Shakespeare. Much of his fame is attributed to the biography done by Boswell. It centres on the latter part of Johnson's life, where instead of  being seen as a gruff society figure be is shown as the struggling and poverty-stricken writer that he was for much of his life
